A. Hameed (1928-2011) was born in Amritsar, British India. At the time of the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he migrated with his family to Lahore where he joined Radio Pakistan as a Script Writer. He started writing Urdu short stories in 1948. HIs contemporaries included Ashfaq Ahmad, Intizar Husain, Saadat Hasan Manto and Mumtaz Mufti.
His style combined realism with romanticism and this prompted Krishan Chander, a leading Urdu short story writer of the time, to make the comment that A. Hameed writes with the stem of a rose.
A. Hameed, whose realist genre Urdu novel "Darbay" published in 1950 made a great impression on me during my formative years in Lahore, was also my eldest maternal Uncle or my Maamoon Jaan.
