Majeed Amjad (1914-1974), the pioneer of Modern Urdu Poetry. This page will feature videos of Majeed Amjad's Urdu poems.
This is an Early Poem of Majeed Amjad, written in December, 1942, when the poet was a 28-year old graduate of Islamia College, Lahore living in Jhang, British India. In 1958, the renowned Lahore publishing house Naya Idaaraa refused to publish this poem along with many other poems submitted for publication by Majeed Amjad for his First Collection of Poetry entitled "Shab e Rafta". After Majeed Amjad passed away in 1974, Abdul Rasheed and Amjad Islam Amjad selected this poem as part of 16 Early Poems from a 380-page register containing Early Poems written down in Majeed Amjad's own handwriting . . . These 16 Early Poems were published in the very first Collected Poems of Majeed Amjad entitled "Shab e Rafta Kay Baad" and were also included by the now controversial Urdu critic Dr. Khawaja Mohammad Zikriya in the 1988 Kulliyaat e Majeed Amjad published by Mavra Publishers, Lahore through the herculean efforts of Mohtaram Khalid Sharif.
Majeed Amjad's masterpiece Urdu poem, Mashriq O Maghrib where he delineates the progress of Mankind and the key to continued progress of Man... the pursuit of Knowledge !!
Majeed Amjad's close associates reveal that he was deeply interested in Science and despite his meager resources, purchased books on the Origin of the Universe, Relativity and Evolution of Life on Earth. The Urdu critic Anwar Sadeed has alluded to this for Majeed Amjad's ghazals
as well as for his Poems
In Mashriq o Maghrib, Majeed Amjad refers to the discovery of farming, very early in the history of Mankind:
بس اک پھبکتی گراز مٹی
کی چادر ِ سبز جس کے دامن
میں کل تھے انبان گندم و جو
and then goes on to state how this led to the development of weapons
He goes on to describe how a class based society is exploiting Mankind and that this has nothing to do with cultures or being an Eastern country or a Western country.
He then talks about the pursuit of Knowledge:
وہ عقل حیراں کی کارگاہیں
discoveries in Atomic Physics and the unleashing of the power of the atom :
یہ ذرے ذرے کے قلب پیچاں
میں کھولتی قوتوں کے طوفاں
زمانہ ہے جن کی رو میں تنکا
and how the pursuit of Knowledge would liberate Mankind.
Bravo, Majeed Amjad !!
