Ahmad Faraz (1931 - 2008) hailed from a Hindko speaking respectable family of Kohat (Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan). His family were descendants of ''Haji Bahadar" a famous saint of Kohat. Early in his life, his family moved to Peshawar. His father, Syed Mohammad Shah Barq, was also a poet. He studied at Peshawar Model School and later completed his Masters degree in Persian and another M.A. degree in Urdu from Peshawar University and became a lecturer in Peshawar University.

Ahmed Faraz initially chose to write poetry in the rich classical tradition of Faiz Ahmad Faiz but eventually carved a new mould for himself in the annals of modern Urdu ghazal.

Ahmed Faraz, one of the few great modern Urdu poets, sits and listens to his ghazal being sung at the Lahore Studios of Pakistan Television by the talented Pakistani singer Salma Agha. As Faraz listens to the couplets of the ghazal, he visibly tears up . . . moved no doubt by the soulful rendition by Salma Agha.... especially at the following couplet:
اب کے کچھ دل ہی نہ مانا کہ پلٹ کر آتے
ورنہ ہم در بہ دروں کا تو ٹھکانہ تو ُ تھا
Ahmad Faraz Ghazal Ranjish Hee Sahee Singer: Mehdi Hasan
The first Ahmad Faraz Ghazal which made its appearance on the Pakistani Movie scene (Pakistani Movie Mohabbat starring Mohammad Ali and Zeba) and made Ahmad Faraz a household name in Pakistan and in the Pakistani diaspora around the world as well as Urdu Ghazal lovers everywhere.

Mehdi Hasan sings this Ahmad Faraz Ghazal (this is the original recording) in the Pakistani Movie "Angaaray". The music for this ghazal was composed by the Pakistani Music Composer A. Hameed (Sheikh Abdul Hameed).

Ahmad Faraz Ghazal "Barson Kay Baad Daykhaa" sung by Pakistan's Nighat Akbar
Nighat Akbar, a flamboyant Pakistani singer, sings a ghazal by Ahmad Faraz in which the poet sketches a portrait of his beloved in delicate strokes... a gem in modern Urdu poetry and modern Urdu ghazals and an example of a ghazal where Ahmad Faraz displays his own unique style which made him so popular among ghazal loving Pakistanis everywhere in the world.

An interesting fact about this ghazal is that Faraz probably edited this ghazal for the Pakistan Television broadcast and added two couplets as well as made amendments in two other couplets so that the version that Nighat Akbar sings in this Pakistan Television broadcast is much better than the version Dareechah has found in the Yusuf Publishers edition of "Jaanaan Jaanaan" (a bestselling collection of Ahmad Faraz poems and ghazals which came out in the 1980s) or the Dost Publications edition of "Kulliyaat e Faraz" (Translation= Faraz: Collected Works).

The couplets that were added by Faraz for the PTV broadcast version are:

    اب   کیا   کہیں کہ   ہم   کو کیوں   بدگمانیاں   ہیں
    و ُہ   بے وفا    نہیں    پر   لگتا    ہے     بے   وفا    سا

    آنکھوں میں خواب تھے یا   برسوں کے رتجگے   تھے
    باتیں   رُکی    رُکی    سی ،   لہجہ    تھکا      تھکا     سا

and the couplets Faraz modified to make them better are:

    یادوں میں یاد اُس کی ، خوابوں میں خواب اُس کے
    نیندوں   میں گُھل گیا    ہو    جیسے   کہ   رتجگا    سا

    الفاظ    تھے   کہ     جُگنو ُ   آواز   کے    سفر    میں
       جیسے   کہ   جنگلوں   میں    بن   جائے    راستہ    سا
