Ahmad Mushtaq, a leading modern Urdu poet from Lahore, Pakistan, currently resides in Houston, USA.
He writes delicate, nuanced Urdu ghazals that are imbued with understated intensity of passion.
A collection of all his Urdu ghazals written between 1952 and 2003 has been published by the Pakistani publishing firm "Sang e Meel Publications" entitled "Kulliyaat e Ahmad Mushtaq" which also contains an interesting Preface by the renowned Urdu fiction writer, Intezar Husain.
Dareechah believed that Mohtaram Ahmed Mushtaq wrote ghazals actively from 1952 to 2003 but had stopped writing since then: this was the impression gained from a phone call made to him in the summer of 2013 (Ahmed Mushtaq is the elder brother of my Uncle Ahmed Ashfaq). However, very recently (September, 2015), Dareechah has come to know that Ahmed Mushtaq has published another collection of his ghazals written after 2003 and entitled "Auraq e Khizani" ... this 2015 collection has been published by Reekhta Foundation.
Ahmed Mushtaq was one of the closest friends of another famous modern Urdu poet, Nasir Kazmi. Nasir Kazmi and Ahmad Mushtaq used to hang out at Lahore's famous literary meeting place "Pak Tea House" from 1947 onwards. Ahmad Mushtaq wrote a book about Nasir Kazmi entitled "Hijr Kee Raat Kaa Sitara" (The Star of the Night of Separation).
