Sahir Ludhianvi (1921-1980) was an iconic Urdu poet and Urdu Song Writer who took Bollywood by storm in the 1950s. He was a leading member of the revolutionary, Progressive Writers Movement (1930s to 1950s) which was the dominant movement in Urdu Fiction and Urdu Poetry in the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent.
Sahir wrote beautiful, soulful Urdu songs for Bombay's movie industry. Some of his songs highlight emotional turning points in his own life which makes them doubly impressive. He had command of an effective Urdu diction which placed his lyrics in a category of their own.
SAHIR LUDHIANVI . . . . Sahir Ludhianvi was a Bohemian Muslim poet who excelled in writing Urdu Songs (URDU LANGUAGE SONGS . . . . URDU GEET ...) and dominated the Bollywood Cinema landscape for two decades . . 1950s and 1960s ... also called the GOLDEN ERA OF BOLLYWOOD CINEMA . .
He is distinct and unique among all Bollywood Songwriters because he insisted on WRITING THE URDU LYRICS OF THE SONG FIRST AND THEN LETTING THE MUSIC COMPOSER compose a melody for the song . . . I don't know of any other Bollywood Songwriter who insisted on doing that and got his wish . . . Sahir was supported in this wish to write by Music Composer Ravi and Roshan and Chitragupta to name a few maestro music composers of Bollywood Cinema . . .
There was no one like Sahir . . . the quality of his lyrics measured up to the Literary Standards of Urdu poetry . . .
Sahir ... Sahir . . . Who loved Amrita Preetam . . . till his dying days . . .
Sahir Ludhianvi is one of the foremost Urdu Songwriters in the history of modern Urdu songs. His natural talent for writing lyrics and his lifelong dedication to his craft made him a legend in his own life.
This song , like many of Sahir's songs, narrates an important stage in the end game of Sahir's unrequited love for the Punjabi writer Amrita Preetam . . .
The music for this song was composed by Sudha Malhotra and she sang it to perfection.
Sudha was rumored to be the second and the last romantic interest in the quietly smouldering personal life of Sahir. It is said that the inspiration for Sahir's super hit Bollywood song Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aataa hai was written for Sudha.
